On 27 October 2009 Silver Fern Farms' ordinary shares became publicly traded on the Unlisted exchange, listing at $1 per share. It's the first time since the company's inception 62 years ago that non farmers can buy into the co-operative. The listing follows the recent exchange offer to farmer shareholders. As a result, nearly 6,000 shareholders, holding 43 million shares exchanged their rebate and Supplier Investment shares for new ordinary shares. The price will be dictated in future by pure market forces, reflecting sentiment for the long term potential for the company, and the red meat sector as a whole.
