Collaboration by Silver Fern Farms and LIC to Deliver Optimum 'Plate to Pasture' Model

Thu, 3/09/2009 10:38:00 a.m.

Two of the leading players in New Zealand agriculture - Silver Fern Farms and Livestock Improvement (LIC) - have jointly developed a pilot programme which when proven, will deliver "enabling knowledge" to implement an integrated supply chain from farmer partners of Silver Fern Farms to their international customer partners.

  • Silver Fern Farms is New Zealand's leading procurer, processor and marketer of lamb, mutton, beef, venison and associated products to more than 60 countries
  • LIC is one of the largest integrated herd improvement organisations in the world with proven data and analysis management.

The pilot, which begins in September this year, will involve around 150 farmers and 150,000 lambs for export to Europe, paving the way for an integrated supply chain for red meat that, the partners say, will add significant value to New Zealand's export trade.

The pilot will utilise EID tags to link into MINDA, LIC's herd/flock control system. This is combined with on farm input and production and X-ray analysis from Silver Fern Farms' processing plants, linked back to genetics to provide farmers with an overall market-genetic-production performance measure.

The lamb trial will be followed by a beef and venison project early next year. Launching the pilot trial today, Silver Fern Farms' Chief Executive Keith Cooper said the current supply chain for prime beef, deer and sheep was fragmented, inefficient and could not effectively optimise the value chain to retail customer's specifications and supply profile, with farmer preferences and climatic conditions impacting volumes and quality of livestock along the supply chain.

"The integrated supply chain "modelling" for red meat that we're proposing, under our "plate to pasture" model will bring farmers closer to the consumer and create potential for greater on-farm productivity and profit.

Mark Dewdney, LIC's Chief Executive, said the opportunity to make available his company's considerable expertise in individual animal recording, coupled with the market relevant data from Silver Fern Farms creates an exciting opportunity for the red meat industry.

"LIC is recognised, world wide, as one of the leading developers of animal management and evaluation systems and even though sheep and beef haven't been our traditional market, the expertise required is very much in line with what we've developed over many years."

The successful implementation of an integrated supply chain model will enable the partners to meet more sophisticated customer product requirements, improve the performance inventory management along the supply chain and improve on farm performance through the monitoring of the performance of individual animals against customer specifications and benchmarked against other animals.

"This is a great example of collaboration in action, focusing on farmers and customers in unison," said Mr Cooper.
