Silver Fern Farms announced today that its venison plant at Hokitika would be reconfigured to process cattle - signalling confidence in the West Coast deer and cattle sector and in particular the capability of the Hokitika plant. Work is to start immediately.
Keith Cooper, Silver Fern Farms' Chief Executive said that large volumes of cattle were trucked out of the West Coast each year, with many going to the North Island for processing. "This is clearly not ideal in relation to animal welfare nor is it environmentally complete in relation to greenhouse gas emissions from transportation.
"We identified an opportunity to make better use of our deer plant at a time of year when deer numbers are low. This will provide an improved service to our West Coast suppliers and also extend our capability to service offshore customers with product."
Mr Cooper said the investment would extend the processing season as the cattle processing would be complementary to deer processing, meaning the company would be able to provide a more secure livelihood to its plant employees.
"We will still be able to handle the local supply of farm and feral deer, with deer processing on one or two days each week in autumn."
